“My first memories of her were in the second grade,” Blomme said. “She moved to Marshall with her mom, who had gotten a job at the college. As they entered high school, Blomme recalls her friend being “a high-energy whirlwind” ... who was quick-witted, intense, determined, intelligent and strong willed.
“There were wayside rest bonfires, house parties, outings at the Blue Moon and Vahalla, Lake Brauner and prom,” she said. “It was teenage innocent, crazy, fun times that served to connect us to one another for life.”
Blomme said that Michelle was a small gal, but that it seemed like everything else about her was big.
“Her prom dress , with its five-foot wide hoop skirt, was big,” Blomme said. “She was Little Bo Peep without the sheep. It was hard to get her and her dress in the car.”
Blomme said Michelle had a big voice and could swear loud, too. She was also known to ride her bike big as well.
“She rode her bike 30 miles one way on Highway 68 to and from her job in Canby,” Blomme said. “Michelle dreamt big. When faced with a fork in the road, she chose the challenge — sometimes to a fault. She didn’t look back.”
